چکیده

We study the effect of reddening on microlensed stars towards the LMC. If lenses are in the LMC disk, then the source stars should be at the far side or behind the LMC disk. Thus they should experience more reddening and extinction by dust in the LMC disk than ordinary stars in the immediate neighbouring lines of sight. Clearly such bias would not occur if the lenses are machos in the Galactic halo. We simulate this effect in a variety of models for the LMC stars and dust. We stress that the optical depth is not one number, but a function of the reddening of the survey stars. We discuss how these effects could be used to constrain the fraction of machos in the dark halo. Subject headings: dust, extinction – Magellanic Clouds — Galaxy: structure

We propose an observational test that can break the degeneracy of two main classes of microlensing models to the Magellanic Clouds: (a) the lenses are located in the Galactic halo, and (b) the lenses are located in the LMC disk. The source stars in the latter (self-lensing) models tend to be at the far side or behind the LMC disk, thus experience more reddening and extinction by dust in the LMC...

We obtain restrictions on the universal baryon fraction, f B ≡ Ω B /Ω 0 , by assuming that the observed microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud are due to baryonic MACHOs in the halo of the Galaxy and by extracting a bound to the total mass of the Milky Way from the motion of tracer galaxies in the Local Group. We find a lower bound f B > 0.29 +0.18 −0.15. Consistency with the pr...

The rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are ideal for studying the process of star formation. Here we focus on the determination of age spreads amongst the massive stars in two young clusters , NGC1818 and NGC1805. We present colour magnitude diagrams (derived from HST data) for these clusters, and discuss the difficulties in age spread determination.

All of the proposed explanations for the microlensing events observed towards the LMC have difficulties. One of these proposed explanations, LMC self-lensing, which invokes ordinary LMC stars as the long sought-after lenses, has recently gained considerable popularity as a possible solution to the microlensing conundrum. In this paper, we carefully examine the set of LMC self-lensing models. In...
